China, Mali agree to maintain mutual support, strengthen cooperation

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mali Abdoulaye Diop in Beijing, with the two sides agreeing to maintain mutual support and strengthen cooperation in various fields.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that China fully understands and respects the independent choice of the Malian people.

“China has never interfered in the internal affairs of other countries,” he added.

Noting Mali has achieved important results in maintaining national stability and protecting the security of its people, Wang said he believes that the Malian side has the wisdom and ability to resolve the temporary difficulties it is currently facing, to take the destiny of the country’s development and progress into its own hands, and to realize lasting peace and tranquility.

China is ready to continue to provide firm support to the Malian side and to work together to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and the basic norms of international relations, Wang stressed.

Wang pointed out that in recent years, China and Mali have successfully implemented a number of practical cooperation projects, bringing benefits to the people of Mali.

China is willing to deepen cooperation with Mali in education, training, medical care and agriculture, he said, and voiced the hope that the Malian side will continue to take practical and effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel in Mali.

Wang also called for joint efforts to implement the Initiative on Supporting Africa’s Industrialization, the Plan for China Supporting Africa’s Agricultural Modernization, the Plan for China-Africa Cooperation on Talent Development and strengthen cooperation under the mechanism of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

Calling China a reliable friend and partner, Diop told Wang that Mali adheres to independence and autonomy and abides by the one-China principle.

Mali hopes to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with China, and will do its utmost to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel in Mali, he stressed.

The Malian side looks forward to learning from China’s successful development experience, continuing to receive support and assistance from the Chinese side, and deepening all-round practical cooperation between Africa and China, Diop added.
