Google on Monday announced the launch of the Google News Initiative (GNI) AI Skills Academy in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), aimed at preparing Indian newsrooms for an AI-driven future.
In a statement, Google said, “Continuing our commitment to support news organisations across India with cutting-edge technology, we’re excited to introduce the GNI AI Skills Academy in partnership with IIMC’s Department of New Media.”
The 10-week hybrid programme will train journalists and media educators in foundational AI concepts and practical applications. Participants will learn to use Google’s AI tools—NotebookLM, Gemini, AI Studio, and Pinpoint—to enhance newsroom workflows, boost efficiency, and enable more creative, in-depth storytelling.
Conducted with academic support from IIMC and training facilitation by How India Lives, the programme includes weekly deep dives, hands-on exercises, dedicated mentoring, and problem-solving sessions to help news professionals leverage AI across various newsroom tasks.
Google will also support IIMC in training students and media educators across its six campuses nationwide.
